Download"EXPRESSING OURSELVES! IDENTITY, DIVERSITY AND THRIVING IN ADVERSITY" - This mural project is about bringing attention to substance abuse and suicide prevention and asking for help, speaking out, supporting friends and finding the resources and courage to live. We are intentionally engaging and guiding youth and young adults to express themselves through themes of identity and the diversity amongst each of us and how we can all THRIVE individually and together in this world. This is a mural depicting a RESILIENT world of acceptance amongst our DIVERSITY. We are expressing ourselves because "Tomorrow Needs Us" (a rewording, with permission, on the poem "Tomorrow needs You" found on twloha.com that will be scribed in the mural).
A little about the project PROCESS: The MURAL project involved community engagement design sessions for design input from various sectors and youth of our community. Our mural intern artists who are working alongside professional artists have compiled all the drawings, that were submitted to us from many different people, into a final mural design and created a giant paint-by-number mural. The design is projected onto the prepared and primed 5x5 mural pelon material. This process allows our team to engage and invite the community to help paint the mural. Once all the 5x5 panels of the mural design are painted, the mural team will affix the 5x5s onto the wall connecting and touching up each piece that when all together will showcase the full mural design on the wall as if it were painted on the wall. This process not only guarantees a long life for the mural but is intended to garner community involvement and engagement. For us, it’s the engagement process that is important and the results that come out of the discussions and collaboration of ideas acknowledging a representation of our community and prompting courage to seek for help, to express yourself, your feelings and to speak out.
